Page history last edited by MadameMoodle 5 days ago

DISCLAIMER: I haven't had the time yet to clean up this page. Please bear with the multiple typos. Thanks.

The conference is coming to an end. But before I hop on the train, a few reflections before I begin this day's notes.

It's been hard to keep up with my notes (and clean them up in a timely fashion). There is still a mess of typos on Wednesday's notes (SO thankful for my keyboarding skills, dismal as they may be). I had a Skype session last night with my iMet group that started an hour early, eating into my precious editing time. I'm amazed at how little free time I've had; there are so many sessions each day and lots of vendors to speak to in the exhibit hall. Also, I'm mindful of the fact that I'm not here on my own dime. I feel that I have a responsibility to give 'them' more bang for their buck by taking in as much information as possible. I have really enjoyed this opportunity to be a student and wish that it were regular practice to allow teachers to attend conferences. It's energizing, validating as well as motivating.

7:30-8:15 Eye-Opening Keynote

Hard decision this morning. Opted to go with Antwon Lincoln, who calls himself the 'Evangelist of Educational Technology.' I saw him yesterday in the MouseSquad session where he asked many questions about how the students did their job (and what union issues arose).

He wrote a book, Confessions of a Technology Leader; Web 2.0 Enhanced.

It's about leadership and finding the stories. How do you put tech in the envorment and achieve success (ED study slams sofware efficacy- article).

Hopefully we will go back to our sites not thinking that we have to go to work but that we have to go inspire. We need to lead the charge and share the wealth of knowledge that we've been exposed to.

Tom Peters the Pursuit of WOW!; whatever get measured gets managed

If I'm in the tech ed field, I need to figure what out there gets measured because that's what's going to be managed. (How can we introduce WEb 2.0 when we're still dealing with 1.0: "What do you mean you forgot your password?")

And now I'm not paying attention any more because it's a K-8 classroom tool....is this another infomercial disguised as a session? He's a charismatic speaker but I feel like I've been played. Nuts.

Phew!!!! He's being realistic. Here comes the talk....

Chula Vista Elementary School District   Eduational technology plan for 2008-2011. Try to track it down.    Board of Education   David Bejarano, Larry Cunningham (Google 'em)-Gave up 10-30-08; it's not online.

The "Implementation Model" Copyrighted by AL (www.TLConfessions.com)

Software needs to be evaluated clearly. Even with the 'best' software, there are other variables that are critical to our success with the program. The imiplementation model has not been studied- why are things still in the boxes 3 years after they're bought.

tech: what tech will be used Successmaker

Focus: the purpose     Without focus, there's confusion

  • What is the purpose? What is this product designed to do?
  • Belief: How does this fit in my district's mission?
  • (As TL, how do I make sure that this focus is communicated to my staff?)
  • don't just make the case to buy the program, you need to believe in the program. Don't just go off what the salesperson or my colleague says, need to align it with

Ability: the skills     Without ability, there's anxiety

  • What SHOULD the abilities of the stakeholders be?
  • Technical Abilities- computer skills ('Is that the 'ON' button?'), knowledge of software (basic understanding), management skills
  • Instructional Abilities- connect with content, how to read/analyze reports (Data Director!), need to know how to monitor the program
  • 1.What is need to edevelop the avitiliteis what is need to sustain what is needed to increase it?

Commitment: the connection LEADERSHIP TEAM      Without commitment, there's little to no growth.

  • How SHOULD stakeholders deomstrate commitment?
  • To read reports, use the data, commit to learn the product, admin needs to commit to give TL time
  • What is needed to devel commitment, sustain it, increase it?

Resources: the stuff     Without resources, there's frustration.

  • What assets SHOULD the site possess (people, support, model programs, etc.)?
  • I need workable computers and computer support. I need to know if I am doing it right. I need training, ongoing training. External evaluation is necessary.
  • I need a model school. Perhaps we can collaborate (choose a school with a similar demographic)
  • What is needed to obtain the resources? to sustain the resources? to increase the resources?

Strategy: the plan     Without strategy, there's a false start.

  • What ACTIONS should be taken
  • the implementation plan should focus on obtaining, sustaining, and increasing the following secitons:
    • abilities
    • commitment
    • resources
  • PURPOSE connecting to the belief
    • defining
    • reinforcing

Essential questions (2 others but he went to fast even though he reiterated that this was the most important part- now I'm frustrated):

  • who needs to be involved in the implementation of the focus technology?
  •
  •

How do I reach the kids of the teacher who is a Luddite? I have to work with that teacher.

8:45- 9:45 Concurrent Session 11

Kids Teaching Kids: Create a Classroom Collaborative Culture (MathTrain- middle school)

Only regret is that they couldn't have provided some speakers to that the whole group could have participated in the Skype session. Otherwise, what a great presentation. Kudos to our sub, Brian Van Dyck, for making the presentation possible after "The Man"/district pulled the rug out from under Eric Marcos.

    MathTrain     MathTrainTV

He has 2 tablet laptops in his 6th grade classroom (so 1:17?)

To create  the math video, he uses a microphone, a tablet PC and Camtasia Studio.

No PC? Wacom tablet works.

No Camtasia Studio? Free software- Jing, (and he changed the slide before I could see the rest).

It is wonderful to see this authentic work that is captured and saved online. Ownership, investment creates authentic learning.

All done- time for next presentation after I charge up a bit in the hallway.

Sitting in the Marriott corridor (nice armchairs close to outlets). Chitchatting with a university professor from Guam. Gave me a good idea for editing student work. They save it as a doc and then I create a pdf of it with my editing. This eliminates the problem of my comments becoming out of sync with their paper as they apply their edits. (Found out from Ron that we will be getting some Adobe 8 and can create our own PDFs).

POP!!!! I've been 'spotted' by a Brain Pop employee as they received their call to pick a winner. I've won a year's subscription for Encina ($1400!). Combine that with the Nettrekker subscription, Pixton (if they ever send me an email), I've won over $3000 worth of tech for the school. Cool.

10:30- 11:30 Concurrent Session 12

Google Lit Trips by Jerome Burg

jburg@mac.com (Google certified teacher)

400 hits on it before it was mentioned in Will Richardson's blog in March. Now it's up to 162,000 (?). "21st century skills"- 'Hurry up! It's about 10% over.'

21c literacy is a whole new ball game. We need to retool (old school) or reprogram (new teachers and NCLB). So how do you merge passions, passions like 21c literacy and 17c literature?  I had expected this to be a little more involved...but then again, I'm rather familiar with Google Lit Trips so it was all old hat...until he began to speak about customizing markers, path tool for showing borders, transparencies for creating overlays. I've got to check that all out! That's more like it (but there was too little of it). It would have been nice to have been given a tutorial in creating a lit trip. Then again, that is not how the session was described. I keep forgetting that presenters have a need to reach a broad audience; there's not a lot of room for differentiation at a conference session. Google Lit trips now has a download button with a list of the titles they have.

'Le mieux est l'ennemi du bien.' Very apt. Don't need to throw out the old just because something new comes along. May I also suggest that the problem with the way most teachers use tech in education is that 'plus ça change, plus c’est la même chose (the more things change, the more they stay the same).

1:00- 2:00 Concurrent Session 13

BALLROOM; (ridiculous- need the WEP key to access the wireless in this room. Did notes on a .doc so I'll transfer it later- MacBook crashed but district tech saved the day). Here are some not-quite-put-together notes retrieved after district tech services fixed my crashed Mac:

It's in Your Pocket; Teaching Spectacularly with Cell Phones by Hall Davidson (Discovery Learning)

Ridiculous. No wireless to use here. Have to look for Hall Davidson handout discovery education network bureau of speakers and get the handouts which will give me the info on this presentation.

(10-30-08- guess what? Nothing was submitted so thank goodness I took notes)

Cell traffic now sounds a lot like the web.

Twice as many texts sent as emails.

SMS typically read within an average of  15 minutes and responded to within 60 minutes. USA- 16?% of homes are exclusively wireless (no land lines)

Turnover quicker than cable boxes

To reach the 1st billion cell phones- took 20 years

2nd billion took only 4 years

3rd billion   4e (I have no idea what that meant)

3.3   billion more to go

UK, Sweden and Italy have 110% penetration of cell phones in 2006

We’re behind the rest of the world because we still rely on landlines.

Cell phones are allowed in Ghana, Nigeria, Uzbekistan. In Namibia- they are solar-powered. In Bangladesh- ‘phone ladies’ (in a poor village, you get a loan to buy a phone and plan. You are the operator for the village). First world for-profit business and educational  admin. Castro even allows them.

Where are they forbidden? Any place under Taliban rule and a high school near you.

Mobile insider- Steve Smith. There is no peak hour. Nokia just bought Navteq.

WAP- wireless application programs

"Our non-working time has been ruined by cell phones. Why shouldn’t theirs (the students) be? Send a quiz to a student on a phone." Hilarious!

Ip cameras for school security. www.cisco.com   You can watch the security camera from the cell phone.  A SF administrator used to have a few at his school and kids were able to. Just imagine. Student groups will band together to get rid of phones in school.

Nokia has live broadcasts from their cell phones. QIK? It’s possible to create a ‘hole’ that will always pick up the broadcast from the cell phone. WOW. The possiblitlies boggle the mind.
